Writing is a balancing act. Some days, it feels effortless; others, it feels like I’m wrestling with an invisible wall. Whether you’re tackling a novel or a blog post (like this one!), staying productive is a challenge we all face. But I’ve learned that the key to success is finding what works for you. Here are a few writing tips that have helped me stay focused, productive, and (mostly) sane:

1. Habit Stacking: Reward Yourself (You Deserve It!)

I’m a firm believer in rewarding myself for a job well done—sometimes before the job is even finished. Enter: habit stacking. It’s simple. If I do ABC (like write 500 words), I get XYZ (like a few episodes of my favorite Netflix show). It can be anything that motivates you! A handful of gummy bears once lined my keyboard, each bear signaling a mini writing victory. Find what makes you tick and stack it to your advantage.

2. Mindset Matters: Work In Your Business or On Your Business

As an author, I’m either working on my business (branding, marketing, non-writing tasks) or in my business (actually writing). When I’m feeling stuck, I ask myself: Which one is more important right now? Sometimes, no words land on paper, but progress still happens behind the scenes. Whether it's editing, brainstorming, or figuring out how to build my audience, both sides are crucial to success.

3. Time Blocks: Treat Writing Like a Non-Negotiable Appointment

I schedule time blocks on my calendar for writing, just like any other appointment. Missed deadlines mean penalties (okay, maybe just mental ones, but it works!). I even ask my family to respect my writing time with a closed door and earbuds. Treating your writing time with this kind of respect creates structure and sets expectations—both for yourself and others.

4. The ‘DON’T’ Question: Avoiding Procrastination With Tough Love - The most underrated Writing Tip I know

This is my go-to trick when procrastination creeps in. I ask myself: What happens if I DON’T prioritize writing today? Usually, this helps me figure out why I’m avoiding the task. Maybe I’m unsure about the story, or maybe it’s something deeper. Often, our struggles with time management aren’t just about being disorganized; sometimes, we’re avoiding hard truths. But hey, sometimes life is just busy, and we have to laugh at the chaos!

5. Tools That Make You Drool: Set Up Your Dream Workspace

From office supplies to tech, the right tools can make or break your writing flow. I’m obsessed with my favorite pens—they’re only for writing-related notes. The right lighting, desk setup, and gear can boost your productivity and make you want to sit down and write. It’s like creating a space you can’t wait to return to, even on the tough days.

6. Timebound Goals: Beat the Clock With Focus

Setting a timer can be a game changer. I love the Pomodoro technique (25-minute work intervals followed by short breaks). Breaking up writing into manageable chunks makes big tasks feel less overwhelming. And if I get stuck, I return to the ‘DON’T’ question, check my mindset, and—of course—reach for more gummy bears.

Final Thoughts: Writing isn’t just about putting words on paper; it’s about staying committed to the process. Whether you’re lining up gummy bears or diving deep into mindset shifts, the most important thing is that you show up. What about you?
