Hidden beneath the luxurious Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, this covert fallout shelter was designed to house the entire U.S. Congress in the event of a nuclear attack. For over 30 years, it was an open secret, quietly waiting for the unthinkable while life carried on aboveground in gilded splendor.

What captured my imagination—and eventually found its way into my writing—was the stark contrast. Above ground, you have one of America’s most iconic resorts, a haven of leisure and luxury. Below, a fortress of survival, built to ensure power and governance could endure chaos. The tension between what’s seen and what’s hidden, the audacity of it all, struck me as the perfect metaphor for the lengths those in power will go to protect themselves while the rest of the world remains in the dark.

The Greenbrier Bunker had everything: dormitories, meeting rooms, decontamination chambers, even a broadcast studio. It was never used for its intended purpose, but its existence speaks volumes about the fears of the era and the human instinct to prepare for the worst—no matter the cost.
